Design for Manufacture: Getting Better Results Through Collaboration

The customer wanted a continuous weld.

On paper, it made sense.

But we knew what would happen.

The doors were made from thin 2mm plate.
A continuous weld would introduce heat.
Heat would cause distortion.

And the final result wouldn’t look right.

So we challenged it.

Instead, we suggested puddle welds.

Same strength.
Better finish.
No distortion.

A small change - but a much better outcome.

Working With Customers, Not Just For Them

This is where design for manufacture makes a difference.

It’s not about taking a drawing at face value.
It’s about understanding how that design will behave in the real world.

We work closely with customers to review designs before production begins - particularly on complex projects like data centre infrastructure, where getting it right first time is critical.

Sometimes that means refining the design.
Sometimes it means taking a different approach altogether.

Because the goal isn’t just to make a part.

It’s to make it work.

Where Experience Matters

After more than 50 years in manufacturing, we’ve seen where things can go wrong.

Distortion.
Rework.
Unnecessary complexity.

Design for manufacture allows us to address these issues early - before they become problems on the shop floor.

Our DFM team looks at every project with a practical mindset:

Can it be produced efficiently?
Will it perform as expected?
Is there a simpler way to achieve the same result?

These are the decisions that improve quality, reduce waste, and save time - the same thinking that sits behind our approach to continuous improvement in manufacturing.

Making Things Easier for the Customer

Everything we do comes back to one question:

How can we make this easier?

With design, engineering, fabrication, and finishing all under one roof, we can move quickly and make informed decisions early in the process.

That means fewer delays, clearer communication, and a smoother path from design to delivery.

And ultimately, a better result for the customer.
