Engineering Apprentice Northern Ireland: Reece’s Story

When Reece joined Hutchinson as an engineering apprentice in Northern Ireland, he wasn’t just starting a job - he was beginning a journey.

Like many young people in Northern Ireland, he wasn’t quite sure which path to take after school. After working in another engineering company, he knew he wanted something more hands-on and more supportive.

“Before I joined the Academy, I wasn’t getting the same hands-on experience I’m getting here.”

Through the Creighton Hutchinson Academy, Reece found a route that suited his strengths, challenged him to grow, and gave him real responsibility from day one.

Learning by Doing

Reece is now a key part of our fabrication and welding team - hands-on, technical work that demands precision, problem-solving, and teamwork. And he’s thriving.

From the moment he joined, the difference was clear.

“Everyone here is sound - they’ll help you, talk to you, and if you’re struggling, they’ll take the time to sort you out.”

Through a mix of on-the-job experience and structured training, Reece has learned core skills, from grinding and welding to fabricating and assembling jobs from start to finish.

He’s also learning about himself.

“I’ve learned I’m good with my hands - and I definitely prefer that to being stuck in an office.”

The Start of Something Bigger

For anyone considering becoming an engineering apprentice in Northern Ireland, Reece’s experience shows what’s possible when the environment is right.

Now, he’s focused on what comes next - continuing to develop his skills and, one day, helping others coming through the Academy.

Because for apprentices like Reece, this really is just the beginning.
