James could have joined his Father’s business, he had been helping out from an early age, but he knew he wanted to become an engineer. He enrolled on a HND without ever stepping into an Engineering Company and after a year, thought he had made a mistake and in fact this wasn’t a world he would enjoy.
He got a job as a youth worker and spent 6 years working with young people before his passion for Engineering started to push him again. He was lucky to get his first engineering job via some family contacts in Cookstown, James liked being able to see the process from the start to finish.
After 3 years, he decided that it was time to move to another company, this time he chose Hutchinson Engineering. He was only with us for 10 months and when an opportunity came up at another company as a supervisor, he took it. As a supervisor, he had more freedom which helped him to develop his creativity. Nevertheless, it was not enough to make him stay, a new role with Hutchinson’s, saw him return again after only 10 months away.
James now has a clear path within the business, he will be trained in England and become a press programmer. He explains, “I love the variety of work, the team ethos, the great working conditions and even the targets that are set give me a feeling of belonging and confidence that I haven’t found elsewhere. The fact that we all have regular contact with Mark and the rest of the senior team also makes a difference. I enjoy learning and intend to stay and progress.”
It can be easy to lose interest in a job, that’s why, here at Hutchinson Engineering, we work on preserving the passion by providing daily challenges for our team.
