As a company we are committed to respecting the people, environment and communities in which SJC Hutchinson Engineering Ltd operates. Over the past 40 years our approach has been to create long-term sustainable value for our customers, employees and society as a whole.
This is reflected in all our activities, whether that is through reaching out and engaging with local communities, building bridges to education and training, managing and improving our environmental and encouraging employees and suppliers to be aware of the effects of their activities.
We maintain very close links with all of our local schools, colleges and universities. This involves on-site visits, presentations at schools and participation in the QUB formula racing team. We also have partnerships with Universities by offering 1 Year long Industrial Placement Opportunities to students.
We have also worked closely with the local college in developing their laser and folding educational program and have a lecturer from the Northern Regional College who spends one day a week on the shop factory floor along with an apprenticeship program which allows us to grow and also share our technical expertise. This is a great way to transfer knowledge at this level as well as encourage the younger generation into an engineering career. We also offer Apprenticeships for students from the Local college, as well as being involved in the Career’s Ready Program (Engineering & IT) and Industrial Outreach.
In addition, we feel it is important to offer work experience opportunities to students from Local Schools & Colleges. We also offer Industrial Placement to University students. Furthermore, to develop confidence we offer interview skills, workshops and support careers fairs in various areas such as universities and schools both locally and nationally.
Hutchinson Engineering is a family based company with a strong local base. We also enjoy sponsoring a number of local sportsmen and groups. This includes a junior rugby team, a junior football team and a local weightlifter. We are proud sponsors of Ballymena Rugby Club, and Kilrea Gaelic Club and Football Club.
At our company’s location we have restored two traditional cottages that reflect times gone by. Local historic groups, churches and schools regularly use these facilities for educational or recreational purposes and any monies obtained are donated to our charities of the year. We also proudly support local suppliers and businesses.
On an annual basis our employees select a charity that the whole company can raise funds for. Support comes in the form of fundraising activities such as participation in Belfast marathon, quizzes, cycling events and open days to donations at Christmas in lieu of customer or supplier gift boxes. In recent years we have successfully raised money for our chosen Charity. A calendar of events for 2017 can be found attached.
Hutchinson Engineering’s environmental policy sets out the company’s objective to maintain operational standards to protect the environment. The company aims to:
- Reduce the amount of waste produced
- Make efficient use of renewable resources
- Reuse packaging material
- Recycle raw materials where possible
Internally we have attained ISO 14001, ISO 9001 and OHSAS 18001 accreditations. These are internationally recognised standards for Health & Safety and Environmental compliance. These act as the building blocks for social responsibility within our company. We also monitor and measure the impact of the noise created by the factory, which is important to us as we are aware of our domestic neighbours. There is also a continuous to reduce the impact our company has on the Environment, and plan on reducing the Top 5 impacts, e.g. Solar Panels 2017, Changing FLTs from diesel to electric.
